Ancestral tablets (神主牌) in Singapore
A gentle explanation of ancestral tablets and the points families usually think about.

What is a 神主牌?
A 神主牌 is a tablet bearing the name of an ancestor or departed family member. In Chinese families it is a way to remember them and to hold family rites at festivals and on special days.
Customs differ between families, dialect groups and traditions. This page gives general information only, and your family's own practice comes first.
Is an ancestral tablet the same as a niche?
No. A niche is a place for an urn of ashes, while a tablet is a name plate used for remembrance. Some families arrange both, and some arrange only one.
See columbarium niches and our guide on niche versus ancestral tablet.
Where is an ancestral tablet placed?
Tablets are commonly placed at a temple or in a memorial hall, where there is a space set aside for them. Some families keep tablets at home, which is a family decision.
Benjamin can talk about ancestral tablets in connection with Lin San Temple and Thian Leng Chong Toh Tong. Which arrangements each venue offers will be confirmed with the operator.
What do families think about before choosing?
Take your time. These are family decisions, and nobody should feel pressed.
- Family name and lineage. Which ancestors or relatives the tablet is for, and who in the family will look after it.
- Rites and customs. Which prayers or offerings your family follows, and whether the venue can accommodate them.
- Visits. How often relatives expect to visit, and how easy the journey is for older family members.
- Family agreement. It helps when parents, siblings and other relatives talk it through together.
How does a consultation work?
You tell Benjamin what you would like to understand. He explains the options, answers your questions in English or Chinese, and will share current options and prices from the operator. If you wish, he can arrange a visit. See also all services.
